286) Hoist Manufacturers Institute
The Hoist Manufacturer's Institute, an affiliate of Material Handling Industry, is a trade association of manufacturers of overhead handling hoists. The products of its member companies include hand chain hoists, ratchet lever hoists, trolleys, air chain and air rope hoists, and electric chain and electric wire rope hoists.

287) Manual hoist
A suspended machinery unit that, by use of manual operation, is used for lifting and lowering of a freely suspended (unguided) load. Generally uses chain (roller or link) as its lifting medium
288) Lever hoist
A lever operated manual device used to lift. lower, or pull a load and to apply or release tension. Utilizes a ratchet and pawl mechanical configuration to incrementally raise or lower a load or to apply or release tension.
289) Strap hoist
A lever operated manual device, utilizing polyester or nylon straps as the lifting medium, used to lift, lower, or pull a load and to apply or release tension.
290) Pneumatic hoist
A motor driven hoist whose power is derived from pneumatically powered motors. These hoist are often used in areas where electrical sparks are undesirable due to the possibility of explosion of fumes or materials.
291) Link chain
A form of chain made up of a series of metal loops or links that are joined together pivotally and form a medium for lifting or conveying and transmitting power or motion.
292) Roller chain
A series of alternately assembled pin links and roller links in which the pins articulate inside the bushings and the rollers are free to turn on the bushings are press fit in their respective link plates.
293) R- Mark
In 1998, the members of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) voluntarily chose to cause conformance to RMI 97 and any successor documents(s) to be a condition of membership in the Association.
In 1999, the members of RMI agreed to a certification process administered through a panel of independent Registered Professional Engineers. Certification requires the submitter to demonstrate a working knowledge of RMI 97 including delivering evidence of various physical tests needed to compute frame and beam load tables.
Upon satisfactory completion of the Certification Process, the submitter is awarded a license to apply a unique registered R-Mark to designs. The R-Mark is only applied by a Licensed Professional Engineer along side of his/her PE seal.
The process is open to all rack manufacturers. RMI encourages specifiers and users of Industrial Steel Storage Rack to consider the value of R-Mark certification when applying racking solutions.
294) Pallet racks
A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.
295) Rack Association
The Rack Manufacturers Institute, Inc. is an independent incorporated trade association affiliated with the Material Handling Industry. The membership of RMI is made up of companies which produce the preponderance of industrial storage racks.
296) Electric overhead crane
A crane with a single or multiple girder (bridge girder) bridge carrying a movable or fixed hoisting mechanism and traveling on an overhead fixed runway structure with all or most movements powered by electric motors.
297) Box girder crane
An overhead traveling crane that utilizes a "box" configuration in fabricating the bridge girder. This box girder design incorporates a four-sided box with a running surface plate for the hoist trolley attached to the bottom of the box. The advantage of the box girder is that it possesses greater loading capabilities and is able to span greater bridge distances. Generally utilized in pairs with the hoisting mechanism operating on rails attached to the top of each box girder.
298) Single leg gantry crane
A gantry crane designed to have one "leg" of the crane supporting an end of the bridge and the other end of the bridge is supported by an end truck running on an elevated rail or runway. Often referred to as a semigantry crane.
299) Double leg gantry
An overhead traveling crane designed so that the bridge carrying the trolley or trolleys is rigidly supported on two or more legs moving on fixed rails embedded in the floor (via end trucks attached to the bottom of each leg) or on wheels.
300) Column mounted jib crane
Also referred to as a "pillar-supported" jib crane. The jib is attached to a self-supporting floor mounted or floor to ceiling mounted mast. A column mounted jib crane may also be supported vertically by a structural column of the building structure itself.
