631) Plastic pallet

A device used for moving and storing freight.  It is used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling, and transporting goods as a unit load.  Commonly, it is about four feet square and is so constructed to facilitate the placement of a lift truck's forks between the levels of a platform so it may be moved easily.

632) Rack

A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads

633) SMA

The Storage Manufacturers Association (SMA) members are the Industry’s leading suppliers of industrial storage equipment. They supply storage solutions worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector.

634) Shelf

A storage surface located above the floor level and usually contained in shelving system or rack system. The formed steel sheet which attaches horizontally to the posts and supports the load.  Shelves are available in many sizes and a number of capacities. Shelves should be specified based on the customer's requirements and uniform load capacity that the shelf must support.  Steel gauge, shelf formation and reinforcing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and thus determines shelf capacity.

635) Ergonomic

The design of working conditions to better accommodate the human body's capabilities and limitations (human factors).  Ergonomics is also known as the study of work tasks with an emphasis on reducing to a practical minimum the physiological cost of doing the work.

636) Integrated Systems & Controls (ISC) Industry Group

Integrated Systems & Controls (ISC) members are the Industry’s leading suppliers of integrated material handling and controls systems. They supply systems worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector.

637) Integrated Systems & Controls

Integrated Systems and Controls (ISC) refers to a product section of the Material Handling Industry of America. An integrated system is a desired state that generally refers to at least one of the three possible characteristics of an installed material handling system. First, although mechanical automation of the material flow properties of a system may be evident, it is the automation of the information flow associated with what is taking place, concurrently with the physical flow, that is the most defining characteristic. Secondly, an integrated system can be characterized by an unbroken, highly coordinated material flow link between successive stages in a manufacturing or warehousing operation where continuous flow is emphasized, and delays, waiting and intermediate storage minimized. Thirdly, an integrated system characteristically interfaces two or more material handling devices in order to form the bridge between work stations or other discrete points of origin and destination within the material flow cycle, with the goal being a high degree of mechanical coordination and the precise timing of movements. 638) OSSSC

Order Selection, Staging and Storage Council (see OFC )

639) Order picking

Order picking or order selection is the process of retrieving individual items (from storage locations) for the purpose of fulfilling an order for a customer. Schemes by which to achieve efficient order picking will vary widely. However, in all cases it involves locating the items in storage; creating a plan for retrieving the items; physically picking the items (either automatically or manually); sorting and/or assembling them into discrete orders; and in the end even packaging the orders for delivery. Although defined as a process, order picking cannot be achieved without the appropriate computer software and mechanical equipment, including the storage medium, such as pallet racks, shelving, AS/RS (including carousels) and flow delivery racks, and a means for transporting items from receiving to storage and from storage to packaging and shipment. A variety of industrial trucks and conveyors will be found in most order picking applications. Order picking may also involve robotic like devices for physically picking discrete items from their storage location. See also Warehouse Management Systems or WMS .

640) APMHC

The Association of Professional Material Handling Consultants (APMHC) was organized in 1959 by several leaders who saw the need for more reliable, capable and professional services in the material handling consulting field. APMHC is a professional society composed of individual consultants in the material handling field.  It promotes and coordinates the exchange of ideas and information among members; encourages the improvement of analysis, synthesis, installation and training, and assists other groups in promotion material handling generally and the consulting profession specifically.

641) Industrial metal container

An industrial metal container may be made of welded wire or corrugated steel.  Some are solid, others have perforations, and some are made of wire mesh.  They may have sliding or folding gates to provide access to contents or locking lids to provide product security.  Containers may be equipped with bases, legs or other attachments to facilitate handling, or they may be nested or stacked to save space.

642) Decking

The material, generally made from welded wire, that is placed on shelves, rack load beams or walks to support loads of variable sizes. The decks or flooring of a mezzanine can be made of several different types of materials depending upon the requirements, features and capacity of the mezzanine. These flooring/decking options may include bar grating, plank grating, wood planking, plywood, composite materials and cement.

643) Lift

The maximum vertical distance through which the load hook can travel.  The total allowable hook movement between its upper limit of travel and its lower limit of travel. The term "Lift" or "Lifts" may also refer to lift tables, scissor lifts and personnel lifts. Lift tables are ergonomic devices utilized to raise, lower or tilt work loads such as pallets and containers. Lift tables are a scissors lift device used to raise, lower, stack, convey and/or transfer material between two or more elevations and not limited to landings. Such movement enables the worker to access the load at an acceptable level so as to not exert undue physical strain while working with the item(s). A scissors lift is a raising/lowering device that is supported or stabilized by one or more pantograph leg sections. Likewise, personnel lifts are used to raise and lower humans to appropriate working heights so that they may work at a safe reaching level and will have benefit of increased movement not afforded by a conventional ladder.

644) Industrial scissor lift

A raising/lowering device that is supported or stabilized by one or more pantograph leg sections.

645) Loading dock

The sorting or staging platform where shipments are loaded or unloaded.
