Carton flow is a gravity-fed storage system in which roller or wheel tracks are installed into rack structures. This creates a dynamic storage medium in which product flows from the load point in the back to the pick point in front, creating FIFO rotation of inventory. This ensures order picking is always done at the most accessible pick point – the front of the storage system. This creates a safe ergonomic picking process eliminating the reaching, bending and pulling that is required in static storage mediums where product needs to be picked within the structure.
Order picking costs account for 40-60% of an operations total cost. Carton Flow is a material handling solution that reduces these costs by addressing the two major cost drivers in today's distribution and manufacturing facilities: - labor and space. Carton Flow systems condense and organize SKU's to increase pick efficiency and minimize travel, the least productive task in an operation. By converting a static storage system to a dynamic one carton flow reduces travel time 40-80% while increasing pick rates and space utilization 30-50%.
For most operations, carton flow is used for medium and slower moving SKU’s which represent 40-70% of an operation’s inventory. Pick modules are specialized carton flow systems used to achieve high volume order picking in integrated systems.
