1) Accumulation conveyor

Any conveyor designed to permit accumulation of packages, objects, or carriers.  May be roller, live roller, roller slat, belt, vibrating, power-and-free or tow conveyors.

2) Active face

The surface of an inductive proximity sensor where a high frequency electromagnetic field emerges, although there is no direct magnetic field occurring.

3) Active storage

The area where materials, parts, carton, packages, etc. are stored for use in replenishing a picking or fulfillment operation

4) AEM

A conveying system which consists of monorail track, track mounted electrification, individually powered vehicles, a supporting structure, a control system, lifts, switches and turntables.

5) A-frame conveyor

A conveyor support frame with main members set on slopes suggesting the letter "A".

6) A-frame picking system

Utilized to facilitate the picking of a wide size and shape variety of individual items, the A-frame is extremely popular with drug and pharmaceutical distribution facilities.  As the name implies, individual items are loaded or stacked in two rows of dispensing magazines (one or more magazines per item) that are arranged side-by-side, forming an "A-frame".  A belt conveyor passes through the long tunnel created by the A-frame.  As orders are filled, one at a time, items automatically dispensed from the bottom of selected magazines are kicked onto the belt conveyor, and then they are carried to the end of the tunnel where they fall into a tote.  The tote is then transported by another conveyor to an order and/or packing station.

7) Agile manufacturing

Manufacturing that is able to move with speed and ease.  Manufacturing, that through planning and equipping, is able to move nimbly with the currents of business demands.

8) AGVS

An Automatic Guided Vehicle System, or AGVS consists of one or more computer controlled wheel based load carriers (normally battery powered) that runs on the plant floor (or if outdoors on a paved area) without the need for an onboard operator or driver. AGVs have defined paths or areas within which or over which they can navigate. Navigation is achieved by any one of several means, including following a path defined by buried inductive wires, surface mounted magnetic or optical strips; or alternatively by way of inertial or laser guidance. See also SGV , Self Guided Vehicle , Unit Load AGV , and/or Tugger AGV .

9) AIAG Container

A container that meets the recommendations of AIAG/Automotive Industry Action Group for configuration/dimensions and load capacity.

10) AIAG Pallet

A pallet that meets meets the recommendations of the AIAG, Automotive Industry Action Group.  Recommendations concern size, dimensions, fork entry capability and load capacity.

11) AIAG Placard

Product or parts indentification signs placed on containers or pallets that meet the recommendations of AIAG, The Automotive Industry Action Group.

12) Air chain hoist

A pneumatically driven machinery unit, utilizing chain as its lifting medium, and used for the lifting and lowering of a freely suspended (unguided)load.  Often used in environments that require electric spark avoidance due to a potentially explosive atmosphere.

13) Air hoist

A suspended machinery unit that is powered by pneumatically driven motors and is used to lift or lower a freely suspended (unguided) load.  Generally uses chain or wire rope as its lifting medium.

14) Air wire rope hoist

A pneumatically driven machinery unit, utilizing wire rope as its lifting medium, and used for the lifting and lowering of a freely suspended (unguided) load.  Often used in environments that require electric spark avoidance due to a potentially explosive atmosphere.

15) Aisle

The space between storage aids used by material handling equipment and/or personnel.
