1) Electrification and Controls Manufacturers Association (ECMA) Industry Group

Electrification and Controls Manufacturers Association (ECMA) members are the Industry’s leading suppliers of electrification and controlling devices. They supply solutions worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector.

2) Deflector

A stationary or moveable angled arm which deflects product flow access across a belt or roller conveyor to the desired location.

3) Explosion proof

Equipment designed in accordance with existing codes and standards such that it will opearate in a specified hazardous environment without causing an explosion.  For further information, contact the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).

4) Floor plans

A diagram of the operating floor of a building.  Generally shows the area of a building including structural features such as columns, offices and washrooms, break areas, stairwells, elevators, doors, windows and openings such as loading dock area.

5) Flooring

The design of a floor in a building or mezzanine is an important ingredient in the reliability and safety of that building or mezzanine.  Worker-friendly floors are imperative if ergonomic considerations are to be addressed.  The strength and stability of the floor is an important consideration as the floor must adequately support the machinery and moving vehicles utilized in the material handling system.

6) Flow rack

Storage rack that utilizes shelves (metal) that are equipped with rollers or wheels.  Such an arrangement allows product and materials to "flow" from the back of the rack to the front and therein making the product more accessible for small-quantity order-picking.

7) Electronic data interchange

A process by which the purchasing operation of one company is electronically linked with the order entry operation of another in order to "speed" ordering, reduce the amount of paperwork and hopefully keep errors to a minimum.

8) Efficient Consumer Response

This initiative, begun in the grocery industry, that "links" all the components in the supply channel from the producer of the goods to the point of sale so as to create efficiencies in replenishments, inventory levels, promotions and new product introductions.

9) Electrostatic protection

Protection from static charges.

10) Four-way entry pallet

Openings on all four sides of a pallet or the base of a pallet or container, which allow fork truck handling from all four sides.

11) Demurrage

A term associated with the charge (monetary) that can be levied against a shipper or consignee who detains a container, truck, ship or railroad car beyond the allotted time for loading and unloading of that piece of transport equipment. Such a monetary "penalty" is used to offset the loss to the carrier as a result of the delay.  "Detention" is another work used for demurrage.

12) Direct thermal label

A label that is printed using a direct thermal printer.  Advantage to thermal labeling/do not use ribbons.

13) Flow

Materials traveling on gravity or powered conveyor or without manual assistance.

14) Flow controller

Photo eye or similar device used to control materials discharge from upstream conveyor(s) under full line/choke conditions.

15) Fluid load

The direct loading of a trailer from a conveyor line.
