1) Bar code

Utilizes a system of printed bars that are able to be scanned and enables the user to identify a part or parcel.  Used in conjunction with a laser scanner and serves to increase accuracy and speed of product identification.

2) Bar code reader

A device used to identify and read a bar code symbol.

3) UCS

Uniform Container Symbol...Designation for product identification which generally utilizes bar codes and is imprinted on the product container or packaging.

4) Automatic data collection

Automatic identification.  A system which utilizes bar codes and other symbologies to provide information.

5) Auto ID

Automatic identification.  A system which utilizes bar codes and other symbologies to provide information.

6) Positioning

The use of sensor arrays to detect the position of an object in the material handling system typically for the purpose of applying a bar code or other identifier to the object.

7) Automatic data capture

The technologies that support the identification and direct collection of data into a computer system or other micro-processor-controlled device without using a keyboard.  Such technologies include bar code, radio frequency data communication, radio frequency identification and other emerging technologies.

8) Code

Also referred to as "symbolgy".  Code is a particular pattern of bars and spaces that serve to deliver information in bar code form.  Characters to be included, how these characters are to be represented, and the distance between the lines and spaces are unique to each symbology.  There are 20+ symbologies currently in use. The term "code" may also refer to standards and specifications.
