1) Carton

A corrugated cardboard container filled at the facility for handling (shipping).

2) Master carton

Utilized as a  larger uniform shipping carton for smaller packages or carton, the master carton serves to lessen material handling time and adds protection during shipping to the smaller items.

3) Contained load

A pallet load of items or cartons (either identical or mixed in terms of size or contents).

4) Bulk packing

The process or act of placing numbers of small cartons or boxes into a larger single box to aid in the movement of product and to prevent damage or pilferage to the smaller cartons or boxes.

5) Pallet pattern

The  layer- by- layer arrangement or pattern of boxes/cartons as they are placed on a pallet.

6) Master pack

A large box that is used to pack a number of smaller boxes or containers.  Aids in protecting the smaller cartons or packages and reduces the number of cartons to be handled during the material handling process.

7) Active storage

The area where materials, parts, carton, packages, etc. are stored for use in replenishing a picking or fulfillment operation

8) Sortation

Separating items (parcels, boxes, cartons, parts, etc.) according to their intended destination within a plant or for transit.

9) Case pick

The selection of merchandise packaged in shippable cartons for orders from a pick location onto a transporting device (conveyor, cart, pallet).

10) Diverter

A device on a conveyor sortation system used to move a case/carton/piece off the main line.

11) Shuttles

Shuttles are used for the automated handling of totes, trays, cartons or all three in the same system – for either warehousing or manufacturing.

12) Storage

The process or act of positioning and placing items (cartons, packages, pallet unit loads, etc.) in area set aside for holding these items or staging these items for shipment.

13) Underhang

Refers to the less than complete utilization of the full pallet area and is generally the amount of space between the outer edge of the cartons or packages and the edges of the pallet.

14) Roller diverter

A device on a conveyor sortation system used to move a case/carton/piece off the main line.  This device utilizes "pop-up" type rollers to redirect the object in a predetermined direction.

15) Powered wheel diverter

A device on a conveyor sortation system used to move a case/carton/piece off the main line.  The device utilizes wheels(skate) that are powered to raise up form the conveyor bed and divert the objects in the desired direction.
