31) Palletizer
Palletizers are special machines capable of building a complete unit load on a pallet. Although the most common application is for cases, some palletizers can also handle sacks and bags. A less common palletizer application would be for special products such as sheet stock.
There are two general methods employed for automatically building a full pallet. One makes use of a fixed position or overhead gantry robot with end effectors suited to the individual loads, such as vacuum lifts or a gripper. The other method employs more complex mechanisms for forming pallet layers off line, one at a time, and then shifting or transferring each successive layer onto the pallet as it is lowered via a lift/lower table.
32) Pallet stacking frame
A load securing device that often can take the place of containers or bins. This device consists on iron posts and connecting frame members resting on the four corners of a pallet creating an open container in appearance with a certain amount of load retention ability. The frames are removable for storage, but when in use, the loaded pallets can be block stacked on the floor.
This is a particular advantage for unit loads that would not stack safely without the rigid frame. There are other attachments such as special metal frames and welded wire gates, but none of these allow for pallet stacking.
33) Contained load
A pallet load of items or cartons (either identical or mixed in terms of size or contents).
34) Single deep rack
The simplest of all racking systems. This rack is selective and accommodates only a single pallet.
35) Side loader truck
An industrial truck with lifting capabilities and able to accommodate the narrowest of aisles, depending upon the model and type, all the way down to the 5 foot range. Trucks operating in this range are sometimes called very narrow aisle (VNA) trucks. With the exception of the platform type sideloader, the fork and/or the entire mast on a VNA style truck is capable of rotating or swiveling 90 degrees left or right within the aisle from the down aisle orientation. Some manufacturers have models that can stack in storage racks 10-12 pallets high.
36) Pallet truck
A manually powered fork truck. The operator physically pushes the forks into the opening on the pallet and "jacks" the racheting lift mechanism so as to raise the pallet off the floor. Once lifted, the load can be manually moved from place to place.
37) Chain conveyor
A form of powered conveyor used to transport heavy unit loads such as pallets and industrial containers. These conveyors can be single or double chain strand in configuration. This chain is not only the driving force but it is also the part which comes in direct contact with the load and provides friction which pulls the load forward. In some cases, free rollers on either side of or between the chain provide additional support to the load. Short sections of double strand chain conveyors are a common means of transferring loads at right angle to/from another straight section of roller conveyor.
38) Double deep rack
A racking system that is used where a greater storage density is required. It accommodates two pallet loads stacked back-to-back and requires special fork trucks called reach trucks.
39) Drive in rack
This type of rack utilizes upright frames, rails, and ties to allow a vehicle to enter a storage rack structure from one side only and pick up or deliver pallets on continuous rails. Drive-in rack is used to address repetitive products and serves to take advantage of cubic space available for storage, when such unit loads do not lend themselves to block stacking.
40) Push back rack
Utilizing wheels in the rack structure, this rack system allows palletized goods and materials to be stored by being pushed up a gently graded ramp. Stored materials are allowed to flow down the ramp to the aisle. This rack configuration allows for deep storage a each rack level.
41) Stacking frames
Portable storage aids for attachment to pallets to enable stacking of unstable items two three or more units high.
42) Pallet flow rack
May be considered back-to-back selective rack. Inclined conveyor wheel sections are installed in the rack enabling back-loaded pallets are allowed to flow by gravity to the front or pick face. Pallet flow rack is useful for the movement of fast-moving items and serves to increase density of storage and throughput.
43) Storage racks
A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.
44) Selective rack
Steel storage racks arranged in either single or back-to-back (double) rows. Each of the rows offers a bay or number of bays in the down aisle direction. Pallets are generally positioned side-by-side in the down-aisle direction at each level of the bay. The advantage to this configuration of rack is that all pallets are accessible from the facing aisle.
45) Pallet racks
A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.
