31) Vertical Carousels

As a storage device, a vertical carousel provides for closed loop automatically controlled rotation of the basic storage unit, which in this case may be a shelf that can be subdivided into multiple bin locations. However, a shelf or a given vertical position need not be divided in order to handle large items such as a bolt of fabric or a roll of carpet. Because storage is vertical, such systems are popular when conserving floor space. Although automatic insertion and extraction of individual items or loads is possible, it is not as common as it is with horizontal carousel applications. See also Horizontal Carousels and/or AS/RS .

32) Unit Load AGV

A unit load AGV is a powered, wheel based transport vehicle that carries a discrete load, such as an individual item (e.g. a large roll of paper, coil of steel or automobile engine) or items contained on a pallet or in a tote or similar temporary storage medium. AGVs operate under computer control without the need for human operators or drivers. See also AGVS .

33) AEM

A conveying system which consists of monorail track, track mounted electrification, individually powered vehicles, a supporting structure, a control system, lifts, switches and turntables.

34) Quality control

The use of sensors to detect the presence of an object's component part, fill level, or dimensional tolerance for the purposes of providing process quality control.

35) Collision prevention

The use of sensors to detect the presence of objects and, through the use of integrated controls, prevent a collision between two objects from occurring.

36) Radio controlled

Means by which a material handling device or piece of equipment is controlled by receiving commands via radio frequencies sent to an onboard receiver.  Allows the equipment or device to be controlled remotely and out of harm's way.

37) Controller

A device by means of which the operator controls the speed, acceleration, torque and/or direction or motor driven equipment.

38) Sonic control

A means of transmitting "instructions" to the controls of a material handling device utilizing sound and or voice.  A form of Wireless Controls .

39) Lifting beam

A solid or fabricated metal or wooden beam, suspended from a hoist/crane or from forks of a forklift, designed to provide multiple lifting points.  The lifting beam enables the user to attach the load at more than one point therein securing and controlling the load's movement.

40) Hook rotator

A motorized device that powers the rotation of the hook attached to the bottom block of a hoist. The hook on a bottom block generally rotates manually but due to the weight of a load and/or the need for controlled hook movement, this hook rotation is driven by a motor and gearing arrangement.

41) Laser

An acronym for light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.  Converts energy into laser light which in turn, can be used to control the direction and movement of material handling equipment.

42) Radio control

A communication medium through which motor, drives and controls receive direction over radio waves emitted from hand-held and equipment mounted transmitters.

43) Pendant station

Also referred to as a "pushbutton station".  An electrical control device consisting of pushbutton-operated contacts in an enclosure used by the operator for control of the powered motions of the crane, hoist and other auxiliary equipment.

44) Carousel

Carousels are a technology used to store items for eventual picking or retrieval. There are two primary types of carousels and one related technology, all of which operate under some form of computer control. Since the late 1990s, carousels have been placed under the more general category of AS/RS. See also Horizontal Carousels , Vertical Carousels ,  Vertical Lift Modules and/or AS/RS .

45) Voice recognition

The ability to receive , recognize and/or understand voice commands.  Usually associated with computer directed systems utilized for process control and data collection.
