31) Tower crane

A crane designed to handle very large, heavy loads used at construction sites and for the loading and unloading of sea going containers.

32) Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association

The Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association (SMA) was formed in 1974 by visionary industry leaders as a Product Section of the Material Handling Industry of America, a non-profit Trade Association. SMA's mission includes development and advancement of standards and activities to advance the quality, safety and general fitness for intended use of industrial/storage equipment. SMA member companies are concerned, conscientious manufacturers affiliated in an industry association to provide voluntary standards for the design of steel industrial/storage equipment, and to formulate guidelines for the proper use, operation and maintenance of these products. Principal among these products are steel shelving, industrial mezzanines, work and assembly stations, modular drawer equipment, clothing storage lockers, movable base storage equipment, storage containers and directly related equipment. For contact information, please see SMA .

33) Tray

Plastic or metal container utilized to house or carry small parts and items.  Often use in conjunction with carts or shelving for this movement or storage.  See also Cart .

34) Micro-Load AS/RS

A type of automatic storage and retrieval system that handles small items that are typically contained in very small containers, totes or trays, with load weights typically less than 100 lbs. See also AS/RS .

35) Horizontal Carousels

As a storage device, a horizontal carousel consists of a fixed number of adjacent storage columns or bays that are mechanically linked to either an overhead or floor mounted drive mechanism to form a complete loop. Each column is divided into a fixed number of storage location or bins which in most applications are constructed of a welded wire frame. Loads consisting of containers or totes may be inserted and retrieved either manually or by an automatic inserter/extractor mechanism. However, rotation of the carousel, whereby a specific storage location is brought to the picking location, is almost always controlled automatically. See also Vertical Carousel , Vertical Lift Module , Rotary Rack , and/or AS/RS .

36) Mini-Load AS/RS

A type of automatic storage and retrieval system that handles loads that are typically contained in small containers or totes, with load weights typically falling in the100 to 500 lb. Range, and occasionally as much as 750 to 1000 lbs. See also AS/RS .

37) Attached lid container

Just as the term denotes, any material handling container (steel or plastic) that includes a lid that is attached to container and is an integral part of the design and function of the container.

38) Conductive container

Container that is permanently static dissipative.

39) ESD container

Any container that is designed to dissipate electrostatic discharge via it's material composition or configuration.

40) Injection molded container

Plastic material is introduced in pellet form into a "hopper" positioned at the top of a machine and forcing it along a horizontal chamber or "barrel" of an extruder by means of the rotation of a screw.  The plastic material is heated as it moves through the barrel so when it reaches an open cavity, it is a molten mass ready to assume the configuration of the mold. The mold is closed and pressure is applied to form the container.  Once the pallet is cooled and taken from the mold, it can be further processed into secondary operations such as painting, trimming or fastening.

41) Label placard

The label placard acts as a label holding device that allows the user to label and relabel containers, racks and pallets.

42) Manually handled container

Containers designed to be handled by hand and not by machine.

43) Mesh container

Often referred to as a wire mesh container, this material handling device is made from welded metal wire mesh and possesses a substructure to give the container strength and rigidity. A container that is made of woven, knit or knotted material of open texture with evenly spaced holes.

44) Metric container

A container which has its dimensions and capacities expressed in metric terms.  These containers are often designed to accommodate metric size and weight materials or goods, i.e, a one metric ton capacity container as opposed to a one imperial ton capacity container.

45) Nestable container

A container that can stack within another container when empty. See also Nesting container .
