1) End/side edge load capacity

The maximum amount of static load that can be applied to the edge of a platform (end or side) when the lift is in any raised position.

2) Rollover capacity

The maximum amount of single axle load which may be rolled over the platform surface when the lift is in its fully closed position.

3) End/side axle load capacity

The maximum amount of single axle laod (in the case of rolling loads) which may be applied to the loading edge of a lift platform (end or side) when the lift is in its raised position.

4) Injection molded pallet

Plastic material is introduced in pellet form into a "hopper" positioned at the top of a machine and forcing it along a horizontal chamber or "barrel" of an extruder by means of the rotation of a screw.  The plastic material is heated as it moves through the barrel so when it reaches an open cavity, it is a molten mass ready to assume the configuration of the mold. The mold is closed and pressure is applied to form the pallet.  Once the pallet is cooled and taken from the mold, it can be further processed into secondary operations such as painting, trimming or fastening.

5) Palletizer

Palletizers are special machines capable of building a complete unit load on a pallet. Although the most common application is for cases, some palletizers can also handle sacks and bags. A less common palletizer application would be for special products such as sheet stock. There are two general methods employed for automatically building a full pallet. One makes use of a fixed position or overhead gantry robot with end effectors suited to the individual loads, such as vacuum lifts or a gripper. The other method employs more complex mechanisms for forming pallet layers off line, one at a time, and then shifting or transferring each successive layer onto the pallet as it is lowered via a lift/lower table.

6) Modular drawer cabinet

Modular drawer cabinets make efficient use of storage space by providing secured enclosed storage for small or high value parts.  The operator has a clear view of all stored items as the drawers are withdrawn from the cabinet. An added value of modular drawers is that each drawer can be positioned or sub-divided into smaller storage cells.  Modular drawer cabinets, used extensively in tool cribs, parts supply rooms and maintenance areas, provide higher density, improved organization, more security and protection and a greater utilization of storage space. Such modular drawer cabinets may be wheeled or fixed in place.

7) Selective rack

Steel storage racks arranged in either single or back-to-back (double) rows.  Each of the rows offers a bay or number of bays in the down aisle direction.  Pallets are generally positioned side-by-side in the down-aisle direction at each level of the bay.  The advantage to this configuration of rack is that all pallets are accessible from the facing aisle.

8) Vertical Carousels

As a storage device, a vertical carousel provides for closed loop automatically controlled rotation of the basic storage unit, which in this case may be a shelf that can be subdivided into multiple bin locations. However, a shelf or a given vertical position need not be divided in order to handle large items such as a bolt of fabric or a roll of carpet. Because storage is vertical, such systems are popular when conserving floor space. Although automatic insertion and extraction of individual items or loads is possible, it is not as common as it is with horizontal carousel applications. See also Horizontal Carousels and/or AS/RS .

10) Positioning

The use of sensor arrays to detect the position of an object in the material handling system typically for the purpose of applying a bar code or other identifier to the object.

11) Lock

The latch mechanism on folding containers used with a U-shaped part called the staple to secure folding container walls and gates in a closed position.

12) Echo

The time elapsed between pulse emission and reception that is used to determine target position in an ultrasonic proximity sensor.

13) End effector

An attachment, such as grippers, spraying nozzles, welding tooling, and measuring devices, connected to the mechanical portion of a manipulator, balancers, positioner, or robot.  Generally designed to fit a certain need and or lifting situation but is not restricted to single task.

14) Vacuum lifter

A lifting device utilizing the creation of vacuum to attach itself to an object via the use of an electric-powered extraction pump and sealed pads. Generally suspended from a hoist/crane, manipulator, balancer, or positioner.  Often attaches to the lifting mechanism by means of a bail and hook arrangement or is an integral part of the positioning and lifting mechanism.

15) Tie

Term used to describe a layer of product positioned in a unit load or on a pallet.
