61) R- Mark
In 1998, the members of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) voluntarily chose to cause conformance to RMI 97 and any successor documents(s) to be a condition of membership in the Association.
In 1999, the members of RMI agreed to a certification process administered through a panel of independent Registered Professional Engineers. Certification requires the submitter to demonstrate a working knowledge of RMI 97 including delivering evidence of various physical tests needed to compute frame and beam load tables.
Upon satisfactory completion of the Certification Process, the submitter is awarded a license to apply a unique registered R-Mark to designs. The R-Mark is only applied by a Licensed Professional Engineer along side of his/her PE seal.
The process is open to all rack manufacturers. RMI encourages specifiers and users of Industrial Steel Storage Rack to consider the value of R-Mark certification when applying racking solutions.
62) Pallet racks
A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.
63) Rack Association
The Rack Manufacturers Institute, Inc. is an independent incorporated trade association affiliated with the Material Handling Industry. The membership of RMI is made up of companies which produce the preponderance of industrial storage racks.
64) Push type crane
An overhead traveling crane whose horizontal travel is powered manually or by the operator. Often work station cranes are push type cranes. This crane may or may not utilize powered hoist or lifting mechanisms.
65) Rotary rack
A rotary rack is a special variation of a horizontal carousel. In this case each vertical level or storage location is mechanically independent of the location above or beneath it. Each level in turn is driven by a separate and independent drive. Therefore, simultaneous, independent rotation of each level is possible (in any direction). Although replenishment and picking can be accomplished manually, most rotary racks incorporate automatic load inserters and extractors. See also Horizontal Carousels and/or AS/RS .
66) Package detection
The use of sensors to identify the presence of an object typically to actuate another device for the process of identification, sorting, sizing, etc.
67) Positioning
The use of sensor arrays to detect the position of an object in the material handling system typically for the purpose of applying a bar code or other identifier to the object.
68) Push type limit switch
A lever type limit switch that uses the up and down motion of a button as the actuator to detect very small or subtle movement by an object.
69) Quality control
The use of sensors to detect the presence of an object's component part, fill level, or dimensional tolerance for the purposes of providing process quality control.
70) Rod arm
A lever type limit switch that uses a long slender rod that is fixed perpendicularly to a rotating pivot arm as an actuator.
71) Roller arm
A lever type limit switch that uses a wheel rotating around the end of a pivot arm as the actuator.
72) R-bar
A reinforcing element added for increased strength at critically stressed points.
73) Runner bar
An element of the base of an industrial container that provides additional floor bearing area and improved conveyor movement.
74) Radio controlled
Means by which a material handling device or piece of equipment is controlled by receiving commands via radio frequencies sent to an onboard receiver. Allows the equipment or device to be controlled remotely and out of harm's way.
75) Pallet
Generally constructed of plastic, metal or wood, a pallet is a piece of transportation/movement equipment utilized in the movement of unit loads. Usually "fork-liftable" in that it is designed to accept forks between the top and bottom platforms of the unit.
A portable, horizontal, rigid platform used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling and transporting goods as a unit load, often equipped with a superstructure.
