1) Robotic Storage Retrieval system (RSR)

A Robotic Storage Retrieval solution (RSR) storage and retrieval system consists of automated equipment that stores and retrieves products automatically to/from various styles of racking systems. The robotic retrieval system stores the product in a compact manner when compared to more traditional forms of storage. The automated equipment that stores and retrieves product can be in many forms/configurations and is typically under some type of computer direction. Heights for these systems can vary from low to in excess of 100+ feet.

2) Rack Manufacturers Institute, Inc. (RMI) Industry Group

The Storage Manufacturers Association (SMA) members are the Industry’s leading suppliers of industrial storage equipment. They supply storage solutions worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector. Industrial storage equipment includes steel shelving, industrial work platforms (mezzanines), work and assembly stations, modular drawer equipment, clothing storage lockers, movable base storage equipment, storage containers and directly related equipment.

3) Reel racks

A storage rack configuration (one or more levels high) that is designed specifically to store reels of materials such as cable and cord.  The reels are "cradled" in the rack.

4) Read/Write Tag

Technology that allows for a identification tag to be programmed and revised while the tag is still on the container, rack or pallet.

5) Reach truck

Industrial trucks equipped with a telescoping fork arrangement that permits the stacking of loads double deep. For storage depths greater than two, there is at least one example in Europe where the fork unit mechanically disengages from the mast allowing it to run into the rack on narrow rails under its own power which is derived from the truck via an umbilical cord. Applications like this can be considered a very special case of a drive-in type storage rack.

6) Push back rack

Utilizing wheels in the rack structure, this rack system allows palletized goods and materials to be stored by being pushed up a gently graded ramp.  Stored materials are allowed to flow down the ramp to the aisle.  This rack configuration allows for deep storage a each rack level.

7) Rack supported building

A complete independent storage rack system which is the basic structural system of a building.  A storage or warehouse facility in which storage rack functions as the structural support for the roof.

8) Pallet flow rack

May be considered back-to-back selective rack.  Inclined conveyor wheel sections are installed in the rack enabling back-loaded pallets are allowed to flow by gravity to the front or pick face.  Pallet flow rack is useful for the movement of fast-moving items and serves to increase density of storage and throughput.

9) Portable rack

Self contained steel rack units made up of bases and/or decks and posts.  Portable rack may be welded or collapsible units either having a knockdown feature which can be a space saver when units are not in use.

10) R- Mark

In 1998, the members of the Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) voluntarily chose to cause conformance to RMI 97 and any successor documents(s) to be a condition of membership in the Association. In 1999, the members of RMI agreed to a certification process administered through a panel of independent Registered Professional Engineers.  Certification requires the submitter to demonstrate a working knowledge of RMI 97 including delivering evidence of various physical tests needed to compute frame and beam load tables. Upon satisfactory completion of the Certification Process, the submitter is awarded a license to apply a unique registered R-Mark to designs.  The R-Mark is only applied by a Licensed Professional Engineer along side of his/her PE seal. The process is open to all rack manufacturers.  RMI encourages specifiers and users of Industrial Steel Storage Rack to consider the value of R-Mark certification when applying racking solutions.

11) Pallet racks

A single or multi-level structural storage system that is utilized to support high stacking of single items or palletized loads.

12) Rack Association

The Rack Manufacturers Institute, Inc. is an independent incorporated trade association affiliated with the Material Handling Industry.  The membership of RMI is made up of companies which produce the preponderance of industrial storage racks.

13) Rotary rack

A rotary rack is a special variation of a horizontal carousel. In this case each vertical level or storage location is mechanically independent of the location above or beneath it. Each level in turn is driven by a separate and independent drive. Therefore, simultaneous, independent rotation of each level is possible (in any direction). Although replenishment and picking can be accomplished manually, most rotary racks incorporate automatic load inserters and extractors. See also Horizontal Carousels and/or AS/RS .

14) Rack standards

Authoritative guides, or directives, used in the manufacture, sales and use of storage rack systems and components.

15) Reinforcing member

The component of rack decking which increases the capacity rating and rigidity of the assembly.  Examples are: channels, tubes, rods, etc.
