Vision Engineer II


Gray Solutions is hiring a Vision Engineer II to support our Robotics & Vision team in designing and implementing innovative outcome-based solutions for our market-leading customers. We are looking for someone to join the team with proven experience in designing and deploying both 2D and 3D vision systems which are both stand alone and integrated with robots. Accountabilities

  • Design and programming of 2D and 3D vision systems including feature detection, blob analysis, line tracking, line scanning, sortation, robotic guidance, and/or PC based applications.
  • Experience in deploying major vision brands including Cognex, Zebra, Plus One, Pickit, Photoneo, Fizyr
  • Be responisible for understanding, developing and managing to the scope of the designed vision system in its respected application.
  • Maintain clear design coordination between all of Gray Solutions services such as OT, Automation, Robotics & Vision, Digital Transformation and Process/Packaging teams.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment on fast-track projects displaying a strong capability in being self sufficient to learn and implement new technologies or solutions.

Skills & Requirements

  • B.S. Engineering degree in Electrical, Automation, Mechatronics or equivalent on the job training in one of the related technologies listed below. 
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated professional work experience in related field utilizing and working directly with vision applications.
  • Vision experience in packaging is highly desirable
  • This position will include customer interaction at a functional and technical level, candidates must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidate must be willing to support project management activities including, leading technical meetings, presenting documentation for customers, cost and scope development, and project time reporting and tracking
  • Understand and support in Machine Learning AI type applications utilizing programming language in C++, Python, and others as needed related to certain applications.
  • Must possess basic Integration knowledge of factory automation technologies including PLCs and HMI’s.
  • Knowledge of IIOT and associated computing and/or networking.
  • Pragmatic understanding of illumination technologies and strategies
  • Candidate must poses a basic understanding of Food Safe & Hygienic environments.
  • Typical vision systems use cameras and sensors to perform the following:
    • Code Readers - Reading 1D and 2D codes marked directly on a part
    • Error Proofing - Verifying the components are correctly assembled
    • Sorting - Different parts from each other or good form defective parts
    • Gauging - Measuring parts and analyzing them to a specification
    • Robot Guidance - Guiding the pick & place
  • Design requirements that include establishing optical design, generating a sequence of operations and camera logic
  • Material responsibilities include Procurement of material order, specifying Vision material, Specifying Panel Material, Writing material BOM's
  • Contribute to the conceptual and detail design of Robotic cells and independent Vision applications
  • Work alongside vendors to ensure designs and details are shared and communicated to industry and project standards for fabrication and/or assembly.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately receive/interpret/extrapolate engineering direction, whether verbal or written
  • Travel is a regular expectation of this role and depends upon the location of projects and customers, the stage of project execution, and your role in the project. Travel may also be required for annual company meetings and some training. Project-based travel to customer sites and team check-ins can range 15-25% during the design phase, 0-10% during the implementation phase, and 40-75% during installation and commissioning phases. While the role requires travel, every effort is made to accommodate team members’ family and personal requirements.
